The Tea Party is largely responsible for the Republicans taking over the House of Representatives in 2010. With their takeover they promised to make a difference in the way things happen in Washington. So what is the House doing this week?
The house is working on passing a ‘mini-bus’ appropriations bill that makes sure that pizza is classified as a vegetable. Why? New USDA guidelines are set to change the nutritional requirements for school lunches to include more real vegetables and whole grains while cutting back on starchy foods such as potatoes. Currently, pizza sauce is classified as a vegetable, but when the new USDA guidelines begin it will no longer be considered one. Fear not! The GOP controlled House of Representatives is to the rescue!
I really could go on and on about how absolutely ridiculous this is. What’s even more crazy is that apparently this is similar to something Reagan did back in the 80s when he tried to get ketchup classified as a vegetable. House Republicans are saying this bill will “prevent overly burdensome and costly regulations.” I find it funny that calling for healthier meals in schools is ‘overly burdensome’ especially when the obesity epidemic has been called a national security threat by some.
Is this what the Tea Party elected Republicans to do? Is this really what the House should be debating when unemployment is above 9% and the economy is in shambles?
